GOLDEN RATIO 028.25
THE DEVINE SEQUENCE

Release Two of the Golden Ratio 028.24 Collection delves into the intersection of nature, mathematics, and the educational symbols that shape our understanding of the world. Drawing on the Fibonacci sequence, this collection reveals the hidden patterns that define natural growth and movement. Central to The Divine Sequence are prints like Rabbit Print, Dark Earth Pinstripe, and Grid—each reflecting the mathematical harmony inherent in nature’s design.

The Rabbit Print, for instance, draws directly from the Fibonacci sequence—a mathematical pattern seen in everything from the spirals of seashells to the symmetry of flower blooms. This playful motif pays tribute to the subtle order that governs the natural world. Rabbits, often seen as uncomplicated creatures, embody the Fibonacci sequence through their rapid reproduction and population growth, making them a fitting symbol for a collection rooted in balance, expansion, and the beauty found in simplicity.

Additionally, the collection nods to the classroom essentials that sparked our early curiosity. Deep ink blues and vibrant reds are reminiscent of classic ballpoint pen colours, while custom grid crochet patterns echo the look of vintage graph paper—the backdrop for countless moments of discovery.

A LETTER FROM KATIE

This collection was born from my fascination with science and nature, and the beauty and precision found within them. I have always been deeply curious about the natural world, and this year, my exploration led me to the illustrations of Ernst Haeckel, the geometry found in nature, mathematics, Fibonacci’s sequence, and the golden ratio. Haeckel was a true polymath, studying disciplines ranging from biology to physics and philosophy. But it was his artwork—capturing the intricate patterns and symmetries of the animal kingdom—that captivated me the most.

From there, I began researching the geometry found in nature, the Fibonacci sequence, and the golden ratio. Fibonacci’s spiral, based on the sequence developed by the 12th-century mathematician, can be used to predict patterns throughout the natural world, from the reproduction rates of rabbits to the shapes of galaxies. I was struck by the perfection and intentionality of these patterns and wanted to pay tribute to these examples of natural design by featuring them in our prints.

I was also motivated to experiment with innovative materials and production techniques to create pieces that respect and protect the environment that inspired them. For this collection, we combined our signature 100% silk with new fabrics, including a hemp-wool blend and Japanese cotton shirting, to establish a tactile connection to these themes. Each piece captures the harmony and rhythm of natural patterns while honouring the simplicity and utility of the tools that helped us understand them.

Finally, we introduced a custom grid crochet pattern, reminiscent of the graph paper on which new ideas are formulated and mathematical rules are recorded, reflecting both the human and natural worlds.

I hope this collection inspires you to see the world through a curious lens—embracing the patterns and designs that connect us to nature and to our shared experiences of learning and discovery.
